Memorial Glade

# 44

The stately heart of the university is framed by the Campanile and the Doe Memorial Library, both designed by John Galen Howard. Between the two is the Bancroft Library, part of a mid-century annex. The skylights in front of the library buildings are for the massive underground Gardner Stacks. The masterful Doe Library, replete with intricately spaced columns and Beaux Arts ornamentation, dominates the campus’ central glade. In the university’s early days, the glade was an exotic botanical garden and school’s second building, North Hall, stood in place of the Bancroft Library.
